Coming into this year, Phoenixs Las Vegas betting line for total wins stood at 43. Thats barely enough to squeak into the playoffs. This was largely since Amare Stoudemire is out with a leg injury until the All-Star Break. With him, Joe Johnson and Quentin Richardson gone, whod think that the Suns could start off 13-6, and that theyd be competing against the LA Clippers?
Some things theyre doing just as well as last year. Scoring is down by 6.5 points at 103.9 PPG, yet theyre still leading the league in scoring. Steve Nash at 10.6 APG and 18.5 PPG is having a strong MVP campaign. Passing is the biggest key to chemistry, which is why this team is doing so well. Phoenix is leading the NBA in assists, something they did last year on route to the best record.
One thing thats different is the roster. Kurt Thomas and Brian Grant have had less playing time than originally thought. When they do have to come in, the game definitely slows down. With no Amare Stoudemire, there isnt as much slashing to the hoop. As such, they attempt easily the least free throws in the league. With Johnson (2nd in 3P% last year) and Richardson (most 3s made last year) gone, the Suns havent been able to dish it out for a 3 like they did last year.
Players have been stepping up for Phoenix. Boris Diaw at 6-6 has been a utility player for the Suns, playing as big a position as Center. James Jones has elevated his game beyond the plain 3-pt shooter he was last year. Eddie House is instant offense for a team barely needs it. Raja Bell has filled in nicely for Quentin Richardson and is easily a better defender.
Stoudemire is scheduled to return in late February, but by looking at Phoenixs record, youd think he was still with them. This is still the team to win the Pacific division and getting Amare back should give them a 50-win season for sure. Whod imagine it, but Steve Nash without Amare is up there for the division and might have a better MVP case this year than last year.

After a recent set of clinics, my top Coach-in-Training, Ernest Johnson, from D.C. and I were talking about the value of Feedback. Ive been taught by my mentors that physical learning occurs from in-the-moment awareness of experience much more than from being told what to do or reading about it or even seeing it. When you can FEEL something, like the difference between a tight wrist and hand and a relaxed wrist and hand, that feeling (experience) will teach you about wrist-hand tension and how effective or ineffective it is. The idea or concept of something is superseded by the experience of it, and a much deeper learning can occur.
As we were talking about feedback, Ernest got into one of his frequent crazy and spontaneous moments and started yelling into the phone, Feed me, Feed me, Feed me, Im hungry, Feed me, I need feedback! That gave me the idea of an Awareness Monster needing to be fed with feedback. Its like the Cookie Monster demanding cookies, this vision of a wild and crazy pretend monster that is after us to be fed. Me want Feedback!!! I think this analogy will be fun for kids: Feed the Awareness Monster!
FEEDBACK IS CRITICAL TO LEARNING
As Ive written many times, much of my coaching background came from golf coaches and a golf school called The School for Extraordinary Golf (plus a book by that name). One of the truths that evolved is that Awareness is how we learn, Awareness is curative! As put another way, Experience is the Teacher. Words can lead you there, but its the experience that does the teaching. Feeling (and seeing) the difference between one shot and another teaches you how to shoot more effectively the next time. It could even be missed shots (of course). Awareness of a mistake is more valuable than a perfect shot with no awareness as to how you did it. Awareness gives the body/brain/nervous system the feedback it needs to make changes, subtle or gross.
A phrase that describes the effect of this goes something like this: The experience with high awareness of one shot can teach you more than taking 1,000 shots with no awareness. Some people believe you have to make thousands of perfect shots before you learn how to do it at will. Thats pretty discouraging, because how can you make perfect shots when your stroke is imperfect. As I like to shape that line (and what may be the intention of many people who use it) is to say that perfect AWARENESS of thousands of shots is what you need to learn to shoot, not perfect SHOTS. And when awareness is high, it wont even require thousands. Perhaps hundreds. Perhaps 10s. Of course, you need lots of experience, but when your awareness antenna is raised high and tuned into your stroke, learning can be very quick.
The more the feedback, both by yourself to yourself and to you from others, the greater your learning. If youre not giving feedback, then no one knows where you are relative to your experience. You might be totally asleep; you might be totally aware. (Without great practice, its probably more the former.)
When coaching someone, set up a system of feedback and learning will be enhanced. If working in pairs, teach them to give feedback to each other. Its effective for the shooter to speak first and then for the observer to give feedback. If the observer speaks first, the experience of the shooter is diminished.
From my experience, most players are reluctant to give feedback to a peer, probably not wanting to appear critical or contrary. Speak to this and maybe mention how the Awareness Monster needs feedback for learning. For kids who resist speaking feedback to a shooter friend, a less threatening way is to have the observer simply give a hand signal, thumbs up for Yes, I agree, thumbs down for No, I didnt see it that way, or the thumb at the halfway point for Im not sure or I missed that one. The point is that the observation of an outside party can help the shooter see and feel the shot motion.
Watch and Learn: However you do it, observe the interplay of shooter and experience (awareness) — plus an unbiased third party, where possible — and learning. The more awake everyone is the higher the level of learning. Learning takes time, but with high awareness, remarkable breakthroughs are possible … and quicker than you think.

The Staples Center, located in Los Angeles, California, is the home court of three teams: the Lakers, the Clippers, and the Kings. Do you want to know a little secret? NBA basketball betting can make you a lot of

executions per game. If your side gets behind too much, its over no matter how
much time is left. However, in NBA basketball, your team is usually in the game until

Think about it for a moment. If you were to bet a -8 point favorite in football and
the game was tied with 6 minutes left and the other team had the ball, would you
have a realistic shot at winning? The answer is probably not. However, lets apply
the same situation to an NBA basketball game and chop 4 minutes off the clockso
theres 2 minutes left. Would you have a realistic shot at covering the 8 points? You
bet! Teams must shoot the ball within 24 seconds and each made basket is worth 2
or 3 points. You would only need 3-4 baskets to make the 8 points. Granted, the
other team can score too, but in the NBA, two minutes at the end of a game is an
eternity when the teams are close.
Lets look at another scenario. Imagine that its half time in Basketball and Football,
its the 5th inning in Baseball and its the 2nd period in hockey. Which of these four
following scenarios have the best outcome?
1. The team you bet on in Baseball is down by 6 runs.
2. The team you bet on in Hockey is down by 3 goals.
3. The team you bet on in Football is down by 21 points.
4. The team you bet on in NBA Basketball is down by 22 points.
The answer, of course, is number four. Scores are hard to come by in the first three
options. While comebacks happen sometimes, in the NBA, teams always go on runs.
Each season is filled with games where a team was down 10,15, even 20 points and
came back to win. There are many other games where the underdog was down by a
lot and game back to lose by just a few points. With the NBA, you are almost always
in the action right up to the end of the game. Can you say that about any other
sport?
Finally, lets talk about NBA basketball totals. You might find that betting the total
points in a game (under or over) is your thing and you would not be alone. There is
a theory out there that those who can get a feel for totals betting are among the
most successful sports bettors alive. You could debate that theory, but it does point
out a very important idea. Totals betting in NBA basketball is full of winning
opportunity and the sports books dont set them as well as the spread. Will this
translate into more money in your pocket? Thats for you to decide.

When learning any new skill, its very valuable to slow it down to learn more deeply. When you go to learn any new motion, especially a complicated motion like a golf swing, its helpful to slow it down and also keep it small and in close. I am not versed in learning theory of how, technically, the body, brain and nervous system receive and process stimuli. I just know that if I slow it down, I learn it quicker. It just works that way.
Young kids are often just learning to grow into their bodies, especially those with big growth spurts, and this is a great way to help them feel more stuff and learn to do the seemingly complicated motions in a basketball shot. With practice and patience and a lot of forgiveness for the inevitable errors, learning will take place.
GOLFERS ARE NOTORIOUS…
\r Way too often, golfers swing too fast and hard when theyre learning the swing. (When they have it down, too.) Especially we guys, who want power so badly! When they slow it down, learning goes up. A great instruction for a full swing in golf is, Take the club back only as far and as fast as you can feel it. When you do that, learning is greatly enhanced.
The basketball stroke I coach is no where near the complexity of a golf swing, but we can use the same tactic. Slo-Mo it and keep it in close and give the body more time to feel and learn it. Remember to play with the motions, too. Exaggerate and do extremes. Use the opposite hand. Awareness is the main thing we need, and the slower and smaller something is, the easier it is to be aware. Once you know the stroke to a greater and greater degree, then you can speed it up (slowly) and move back in distance (gradually) and youll be able to keep the new stroke going.
Our bodies are amazing learning machines. Find ways to enhance your sense of direction and distance and the motions needed to create a basketball shot, and your shooting will start to soar.

Fred Zollner, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, founded the Detroit Pistons in the 1940s. The team was originally named the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons. Immediately, the Pistons entered into the National Basketball League (NBL), composed primarily of teams sponsored by corporations in the Midwest.
Led by Bobby McDermott, the teams guard, the Pistons dominated the NBL and made it to the series championship the first year they competed. However, they lost to the Oshkosh All-Stars. Two years later they were defeated at the NBL Finals again, this time by the Seboygan Redskins, but by only a single point.
In 1944, they at last won their first championship title and they followed that up with another championship win in 1945. Three years later, the Pistons team transferred to the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and in 1949 the NBL and BAA joined to form the National Basketball Association or the NBA. The Pistons were the NBAs premier squad.
The NBAs first five seasons featured the Pistons in the playoffs and twice the team advanced to the division finals. In 1954 and 1955, the Pistons, which now included Andy Phillip on guard, Larry Froust on center, and George Yardley on forward, advanced to the NBA finals but tragically lost to the Syracuse Nationals by one measly point. In the 1956 finals, the Pistons lost once again, to the Philadelphia Warriors. Until 1964, they continued to qualify for the NBA playoffs but never gained their championship title back.
During the 1980s, draft picks and trades brought many new players to the team: Isaiah Thomas, Kelly Tripucka, Vinnie Johnson, and Bill Laimbeer. Three years later, Chuck Daly signed on as the teams head coach and he eventually led them to the 1984 NBA playoffs. With additional players like Joe Dumars and Adrian Dantley and Dalys refreshing leadership, the team was getting closer and closer to that national championship. Still, during the 1987 Eastern Conference Finals, the Boston Celtics defeated them. However, in 1988 the tables turned, and the Celtics lost to the Pistons, due to the Pistons solid defense, made up of Dumars, Laimbeer, Johnson, and recent recruit Dennis Rodman.
In the late eighties and early nineties, the Detroit Pistons moved to the Palace of Auburn Hills and added Mark Aguirre to the roster. They made it to the NBA finals in 1988, 1989 and 1990 and like old times, they were again one of the top teams in the league. The Pistons relied on a bruising defense and sharp shooting and they registered 63 regular season victories. In the 1989 NBA Finals, they swept the Los Angeles Lakers and followed suit in the 1990 Finals, beating the Portland Trail Blazers. At last, they could claim the title of champion.
Later, the Pistons began to fade as their roster disbanded. At the same time, the Chicago Bulls emerged as a dominating team in the Eastern Conference. However, 1994 brought in a high draft pick, Grant Hill, who helped out the struggling team.
In the 2004 NBA Finals, the Detroit Pistons, led by guard Chauncey Billups and teammates Richard Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace, Tyshaun Prince, and Been Wallace, won the championship title, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers.

The fact of the matter is that most basketball players are not good enough to compete in the NBA. The NBA is made up of the best 300 or so players in the world. Many of the players today come from many part of the world. They understand that by playing in the NBA, they put themselves in a high elite group of athletes with a common goal. In the past, there are many more American players because the sport was not fully developed in other parts of the world. Even if they were, people were not worried about making the NBA and playing for the organization. It is only now that people have got on in the chase for greatness. Now many kids growing up are able to view the stars they love, because of the vast media options. In the past, there wasnt internet and radio but now technology is even stronger. It is so easy to connect that everyone does it if they can. Now that NBA teams have seen the talent in other countries, they are not as hesitant in picking foreign ball players. Some feel that there are better players overseas. With basketball growing as a popular sport, more people are playing. It is something that everyone can do, no matter how skilled or experienced they may be.
Now that several key foreign players, in fact, many have succeeded in the NBA, kids find more inspiration. They find inspiration because someone they could relate too has done the unthinkable. They feel that these people are national heroes, there are many fans of Yao Ming, and has really improved the following in China. Before Yao, there wasnt a good Chinese player and people knew that. Now that he has done it on the biggest stage, he is the center focus of every Chinese person who follows.
This can be said for other players, such as Pau Gasol, who has increased following in his native country, Spain. Many players overseas play because they have proven that they can in their own respective leagues. Manu of the Spurs is a fan favorite in Argentina. David Stern, the commissioner of the NBA has expressed his wishes to improve the NBA global picture. With a whole world following intensely, the NBA will be a bigger stage.

Fabricio Oberto, the Argentine player for San Antonio Spurs, has developed to perfectly complement the All Star power forward Tim Duncan in role as the new center. Oberto has been on the receiving end as his game has been described as anything but pretty.
Francisco Elson and Oberto were in reckoning for the starting job after the Spurs traded Rasho Nesterovic to Toronto Raptors and let Nazr Mohammed go as a free agent to the Detroit Pistons.
Coach Gregg Popovich has said that Oberto looks like a bull in a china shop when he is playing but he is the most productive player he has ever been around. Duncan is one of the best low post players on the NBA circuit and Oberto does an excellent job staying out of his way. When Duncan in outside, Oberto moves inside and when he is inside, Oberto moves outside. Oberto feels as Duncan and he are getting to know more about how each plays as the games progress. Duncan has commented that Oberto is extremely easy to play with. Oberto is know to have strong fundamental of playing the games and very rarely is he seen out of position.
However, Oberto did have problems adjusting to the NBA last season as a 30 year old rookie. He played only 8.3 minutes an outing in the 59 games. He averaged 1.7 points and 2.1 rebounds. He was found to be looking lost is most of the games. However, this season, things are different. He is playing 23.6 minutes per game and averaging 9.2 points and 6.6 rebounds.

One of the most important part of a basketball team is point guard. Point guard has to have a great view of the game, they always have to know where other players from their team are placed and how they are going to move.
Point guards must have some well trained skills. One of the most important skills is ball possession, because point guards are in the game to get the ball from their half to opponents half and when the other team is playing full court press that can be a hard thing to do for a point guard with bad ball possession. Point guards should always know at what tempo their team should be playing and they should never rush to the basket if that is not necessary. Of course point guard should not only know how to handle the ball, point guard should also be able to make a good shot for three points and be able to dribble few players and make a good layup.
One of the things that a lot of people forget is that good play makers are not only good in offence but they are also good in defense. At the end of the game when you look at the statistics, good player will not only be recognized by assists and points but also by stolen balls and turnovers that opposite playmaker did because of the pressure. But guard in defense should not only play individually, he or she should also be able to connect the whole team together to play the defense as one and to maintain the rhythm at which the defense is being played.
All in all to be a good point guard offence and defense should play equally big parts in the game.
