Boating and sailing is not only one of the most popular pastimes today, they have been a popular means of transportation, recreation, and occupation, for nearly all of recorded history. Throughout history, boating and sailing has been a means for many of mankinds greatest discoveries, important battles, expansions and migrations, and a source of food and livelihood. While boating and sailing still maintain many of those roles today, for most of us boating and sailing are a source of recreation, fun, competition, and relaxation.
Today, boating and sailing provide a source of fun and recreation for millions of people worldwide. But there is more to recreational boating and sailing than simply buying a boat and launching it into the water. In order take the fullest advantage of all that boating and sailing have to offer, it is best to arm oneself with as much information as possible.
For those with an interest in boating and sailing the most obvious area of interest is the type of watercraft that will best suit their needs. Fishing, water sports, racing, or simply strolling across the water; all of these are activities are best enjoyed in the proper kind of boat. But the kind of boat you own also impacts the kind of storage needs you will have.
Smaller sailing and motor boats may not require permanent storage space such as a marina. They can often be stored at home and brought to the water on a car-towed trailer. Larger boats need to be moored at marinas where they are protected from the elements during the season, and in areas where the season is not year-round, marinas can remove boats from the water in order to protect them from damaging ice.
Those with an interest in boating and sailing must remember to protect more than just their boats. Protection of ones self is perhaps the highest priority when traveling on the open waters where conditions can change rapidly. Life vests, throwable flotation devices, navigation lights, and fire extinguishers are but a few of the safety oriented items that must be considered when engaging in boating and sailing. Those items, when combined with proper instruction in the rules and laws of the sea, will make boating and sailing a hobby that is both fun and safe for you, your family, and friends.

Looking at the sailboats in the seas, I have always wondered if I could do the same one day. When I almost gave up the idea, a good friend tipped me off on a sailing lesson. Indeed the one that I was looking out for. This Sailing Lesson would enable me to realize my dream. My long-pending dream of flying on the seas.
Firstly, a sailing lesson is not all about concepts and examinations. To understand a sailing lesson in an efficient manner, you would need to dig deep into the concepts. Being a student from the science background will help, as sailing has a lot to do with some basic nautical principles of Physics. I am not saying that a Doctor cannot sail his own boat. He can, but he needs to understand the concepts first. In fact, everyone needs to understand the concepts of a Sailing lesson and get it right.
Secondly, if you start learning how to sail a boat and what are its challenges on Day 1, in all probabilities you may not even go 2 yards in the sea. Sailing lesson strongly advocates learning the different parts of the boat first. If you know your boat well, you can sail. If you do not, even then you can sail but with great difficulty.
Thirdly, start adding skills from the base. Build a strong base. Know which way the wind is blowing and is it favorable for you to sail with the wind on your side or against you. Experts have always advocated sailing with the wind, but I know of couple of Sailors who have denied all basics of a sailing lesson and they do it the other way. It is strongly recommended that as a starter, you stick by the books.
Fourthly, understand what Reaching, Running and Tacking is. Understanding these concepts will allow you not to break your head over the tougher challenges that may come your way in days ahead when you sail. These concepts tell you the science of sailing, different wind conditions and the close correlation between the two. If you cannot get a gist of what you have done so far, it is important to take a lemon break and try to re-summarize because tougher tests are yet to come.
Fifthly, as a penultimate step, try and understand what are the various challenges. This is the most demanding part of a sailing lesson, and however equipped it may be, this part is entirely dependent on the endurance power of the student. If one grasps, this part of a sailing lesson adequately, I must say, he has understood all the concepts clearly.
Last point, concepts aside, you may just not be able to sail your sailboat, if you do not want to. The sailing lesson is a ruddy waste if you are not able to implement what you learned. So it is advisable not to leave your sailing lessons back home when you wish to sail.

Surprisingly more often than not damaged is caused to an inflatable kayak when it is stored away or by over inflating it. Many people are put off buying an inflatable kayak because they feel there is little or no chance they will make it down a river without sustaining a puncture.
This is true if you buy a cheap inflatable kayak sold in your local department store but these days inflatable kayaks are stronger than ever and can take a severe battering before they puncture.
If a rigid kayak hits a sharp rock or tree branch there is a chance that it will crack or split however in the case of an inflatable kayak it is more likely to absorb the impact and bounce of it. Some inflatable kayaks also come with extra protection in the form of a nylon jacket which adds extra protection against the elements.
I have owned an inflatable kayak for over six years and I can vouch for their toughness and durability. I have paddled in the sea and on rivers and over the years it has become my workhorse boat and a trusted one at that. It has been dragged across fields, up riverbanks, across roads and along stony shelled beaches without sustaining any punctures.
The real concern when owning an inflatable kayak is how you care for it when you are not using it. I have two friends who own inflatable kayaks both of whom have had problems but which have been purely of their own making by not storing their boats properly and not showing enough care when loading or unloading them. On one occasion the boat was loading onto a plumbers van and in his haste to pack up and get home did not notice that the kayak had been wedged up against a cutting saw. By the time he got home the saw had ruined the boat beyond repair.
A more common problem with inflatable kayaks it storing them while they are still wet. This happened to a second friend who stored his boat up for the winter months but failed to ensure it was completely dry beforehand. Consequently when he came to use the boat in the spring mould had rotted into the seams and wrecked the kayak. This had occurred simply due to the moisture being trapped in the boat for months on end.
There is also the issue of over inflating. Most people have a tendency to err on the side of over inflating simply because they want the boat to be as rigid as possible. This can cause problems if the boat is left on dry land in the hot sun for lengthy periods and whilst good quality inflatable kayaks will be able to handle being slightly over inflated there is always the possibility of them going pop!

To most people, owning a boat can be largely a matter of pride. It is often the case that buying a boat is a lifetime achievement and something that you and your family are certain to enjoy on every possible occasion. There is something about a boat that makes it a particularly wonderful place to celebrate a special occasion with that someone special. When all is said and done, owning a boat is just great.
However, in order to keep the boat in tip top condition you have to provide the proper maintenance. This is where the use of a boat cover becomes invaluable.
The main purpose of a boat cover is to protect your boat from the vagaries of the weather and dust accumulation. When left unattended and uncovered, a boat will succumb to corrosion and wear and tear caused by rain, wind and dust. You will be surprised to know that the use of a boat cover can prolong the longevity of a boat by up to 50 percent, as compared to a boat which remains uncovered.
What Type of Boat Cover is the Best for Your Boat?
There are many, many types of boat cover on the market. Which type of boat cover suits your boat the best will depend upon what type of boat you have, how long it will be left unattended for, and what type of weather your boat will be exposed to. By far the best type of boat cover would be one which allows you to cover it completely; hence it would need to have cuts that allow it to accommodate the mast, rails, etcetera. This is why many people prefer customized boat covers. They take care of each and every appliance on the boat, giving a snug fitting.
Of the many fabrics that are popular for making boat covers, the best ones come in waver polyester alternated with non-waver polyester. Canvas is also very popular for this purpose. The more rugged and strong the boat cover the better. People who leave their boat unattended for a long time would need thicker and more rugged covers than those who just leave them over the weekend, or for similar periods of time.
The boat cover you use must be totally waterproof. Today, there is hi-tech material which allows the moisture that accumulates on the boat to evaporate (and hence keep the boat dry all the time). Some covers will also protect your boat from ultraviolet rays, thereby keeping the color of the boat fresh for a longer period of time.
Before you make your decision on the boat cover which would best suit your boat, be sure to check out all the available material and the associate cost. Select the cover that will give you the best value for money taking into consideration the fit, the protection it can give and its cost. Your investment in a boat cover will serve to protect your larger investment - your boat, so choose wisely.

If you are looking to buy a boat a Full Pre-Purchase Condition Survey is the most appropriate type of survey. It may also be worth asking for a separate valuation particularly if you require finance or if the boat is over 20 years old, when a survey report and valuation is often requested by insurers. Some surveyors also offer External Hull Inspections or Partial Condition Surveys, the former is also known as an osmosis check when applied to GRP craft. Although these surveys may be less expensive it is very important that the scope and limitations of this type of survey are clearly established and understood before proceeding.
What isnt included in the survey?
The survey contract will outline the extent of the inspection and lists any limitations. The following items are not always included in a full condition survey and may require engaging an outside specialist; rigging above head height, electronics including interfacing, engine and sea trials. The surveyor can usually recommend an appropriate person or may be able to carry out the work himself at an extra charge.
My insurance company requires my boat to be surveyed and valued, how does this work?
As previously noted, insurance companies will often request a condition report and valuation or appraisal by a surveyor as a requirement for cover, the valuation will normally be based upon a full inspection of the craft and may make recommendations concerning its safe operation, this should be seen as an opportunity rather than a chore.
How do I choose a marine surveyor?
It is worth bearing in mind that there is nothing to stop anybody describing themselves as a marine surveyor, it is therefore up to you to establish whether your surveyor is fit for the job.
A good starting point is to ensure that the surveyor is a member of an appropriate professional society or association. These should not be confused with various trade organisations that do not set out to monitor professional standards.
A list and details of the major professional societies can be found on the Boatsurvey.com links page. These societies or associations have a vested interest in their members good reputation, set minimum educational qualifications, have continuous professional development programmes and expect surveyors to work to a code of conduct, which often includes a requirement to have professional indemnity insurance.
Different types of craft and materials will require different surveying equipment and techniques and it is important to ensure that the surveyor has the appropriate expertise. Boatsurvey.coms advanced search helps to find surveyors by location, craft type and material.
A surveyors experience and reputation can prove harder to determine, but you can get an idea from the professionalism of a surveyors presentation and also by local recommendation.
What about professional indemnity insurance?
It is reasonable to ask a surveyor whether he has professional indemnity insurance cover, however surveyors may be wary if this is your opening question! Bear in mind that many professional indemnity insurance policies have non-disclosure clauses, which can put the surveyor in an awkward situation when asked to provide details of their cover.
I need a survey, how do I go about it?
Once you have selected a surveyor you should obtain a formal quotation and a contract outlining the scope of work and any limitations. When a date for the inspection has been agreed, it is your responsibility to make arrangements for the boat to be hauled out for the inspection.
The surveyor will outline any particular requirements, such as having linings or sole boards opened up and the removal on non essential equipment which might limit the inspection.
My boat has been damaged in an accident, should I employ a marine surveyor?
Following an accident your insurance company is likely to instruct a marine surveyor in order to ascertain the extent of any damage to a craft. You should be aware that in this case the surveyors client is the insurer. With this in mind you might consider engaging an independent surveyor in order to look after your own interests.
I have a new boat, should I engage a marine surveyor?
A marine surveyor can often be usefully retained as an owners representative to monitor a new build and will also give a professional insight with regard to working practices and the quality of installations. It may be particularly useful to engage a marine surveyor to carry out a pre-delivery inspection or snagging prior to handover.

Are you eager to put your feet on a new used boat? Do you want a new used boat just for fun or will the boat be serving the interests of your family or do you have some special interest like fishing, boat camping, touring, bird watching or the like to take into account buying a new used boat?
Avoid some of the pitfalls by making use of these simple tips for buying a used boat without regret.
Many potential boat owners will tend to focus on how big a boat their economy allows them to invest in. The economic frames are of cause mandatory to take into account before buying a new used for most boat buyers. Normally a quest for a used boat is an indication of not having enough money to buy a new boat of your dreams. But of cause it can be related to some specific wishes.
Anyway the point to make is this: It is a much more healthy approach to clarify your specific needs linked to have a boat before you develop any concrete ideas of how much money to put into a new used boat and which boat type to go for. Honestly, we men tend to fall for the style of the boat and the status it might give before seriously considering our real needs.
Make use of this list of aspects to narrow down your needs linked to a new used boat and from that on generate your specific requirements for the new used boat:
- Who will be using your new boat? Will you always be in charge of the boat and care for it?
- How many people should be on board comfortable in your new used boat?
- Should the boat be a multi functioning boat or mainly be a boat for some specific functions, like fishing?
- How broad a variety of weather conditions should your new used boat be capable of being used in?
- How important is safety issued linked to your new used boat?
- Do you expect to make use of your new used boat for accommodation besides the obvious function of sailing?
- What are your possibilities for caring for the boat year round often an underestimated task that later generates conflicts in the family.
- What is your possibilities for keeping your boat at a convenient and safe place and to make it easy accessible?
When you have clarified these and other aspects of buying a new used boat you should prioritize your requirements for your new boat: What is the minimum of requirements you want your new used boat to fulfill?
Finally you can search for choosing which kind of boat type that will serve your needs best and to go hunting for your new used boat. In the end the whole story will be about how you get the best value for your money when buying your new used boat.
When inspecting the possible boat to buy follow this check list. Add other aspects beforehand you come up with and bring the list with you for your concerned inspection.
- Get a clear picture of the history of the used boat, including how many owners, age, storage, accidents, how many hours in the water, what has it been used for, why is it being sold now, how about the maintenance of the engine?
- Investigate the conditions of the boat. Get help from an experienced boat owner or technical expert about that boat type, to be able to investigate issues common to that kind of boat type. If it is a wooden boat be very careful to search for rot. Does the painting attempt to cover serious issues? Etc.
- Take it for a test drive. Be very aware of issues like vibrations, if the gear is smooth, how the steering is functioning, etc.
Remember that issues you bring up before your boat purchase might save you and your family lots of money as well as lots of trouble and wasted time and efforts.

We soon came across the largest shootable weir on the Stour. The weir is located near a place called Wissington and has gullys either side with fast flowing water despite the low level of the river.
Nick was the first to go and once he had successfully reached the bottom we all followed. At first we were concerned about shooting weirs on inflatable kayaks which were laden with kit but they performed admirably and no one had any problems. We would have liked to have portaged and played at the weir but we were conscious the time due to the many delays and cars were was still some way off.
Paddling further down the river the scenery was much the same, passing quaint houses, churches and cottages, all very English countryside. Our inflatable kayaks were now becoming quite heavy to paddle and were full of weed, mud and water. We were getting quite tired so we took the opportunity to stop and have a quick drink and bite to eat in a field.
To get to the field we had to climb a six foot mud bank so we moored the inflatable kayaks at the bottom of the river bank. Nick decided to stop in his kayak as he did not have the energy to climb the bank. We sat in the field and watched a group of swans swimming down the river towards Nick. In case you did not know swans can be aggressive birds especially if they feel threatened and you are invading their territory. As we watched them swim nearer they seemed to be forming a phalanx formation and we started shouting and waving to Nick that he was about to be attacked.
Not wanting to miss the sight of Nick being attacked by swans I started filming with my mobile phone from the edge of the bank. When the swans were about twenty feet away Nick raised his arms which caused the biggest swan to hiss at him. He immediately put his arms back down. I started to edge down the bank filming as I did. As I was looking through the camera viewer I had a distorted perception of where I was treading and the next thing I felt my foot slip away from under me and my right shoulder, head and neck smashing hard against the dry mud of the bank.
My fellow paddlers rushed over to help me up as I was very dazed and for the first few seconds I thought I had broken or dislocated my shoulder. It took about forty five minutes before I felt I could paddle again. Gingerly I climbed back into my inflatable Kayak, nursing a swollen nose, lump on my head, stiff neck and painful shoulder. I felt like I had gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson rather than a sedate paddle along a lazy river.
It was slow going for a while and we had already lost another hour. You would think that kayaking down the River Stour on a beautiful summers day would be a relaxing and tame affair. How wrong you would be.

White Water Kayaking is a sport not for the faint hearted. Certainly, in the beginning when learning this form of kayaking you can keep to gently moving waters. But as your skills improve, you can then take on much more demand and dangerous areas of the river instead.
All places where white water kayaking will be graded and the higher the grade the much more difficult the trip will be. Gently moving water will be provided with a Grade or Class 1 classification but the more severe white water that is considered to be almost unrunnable has a Grade or Class 6 classification.
As well as the classification of the rivers that kayaking takes place on there are actually categories relating to different types of white water kayaking. These are known as river running, creeking, slalom, play boating and squirt boating. Each one of these not only needs a certain set of skills but a different type of white water kayak will be used also.
With river running these are very gentle trips where one can enjoy the scenery that you pass but still enjoy some of the excitement that white water brings. As for creeking this is very similar to river running but you will need more experience to be able to cope with the rapids as these are of a much higher grade.
As for white water slalom, kayaking this is something that we normally see on television and which is an event in the Olympics. Here kayakers compete against each other through a set of gates on a designated section of river in the quickest time. Whilst play boating and squirt boating are a form of freestyle kayaking where special moves need to be undertaken in order to gain points.

Types of Boating Accidents Boating is one of the most popular activities to engage in during the summer months. Unfortunately, many people suffer injuries as a direct result from boating accidents. There are over 8,000 boating accidents that take place each year and of those, approximately 5,000 result in serious injury. The best way to be safe when boating, is to use preventive measures to ensure that you wont succumb to a boating accident.
Capsizing, fire, flooding, someone falling overboard, sinking, and flooding causes the main types of boating accidents. Also, many boating accidents occur when boats collide into other boats, as well. It is important to realize that boating accidents are very serious and often result in serious injury. Therefore it is important to understand that it is much easier to prevent boating accidents, as opposed to dealing with their aftermath.
Causes of Boating Accidents Some of the most prevalent causes of boating accidents include alcohol use, equipment failure, boating too fast, not paying attention while boating, boating in treacherous waters, having too many passengers on your boat, and not staying centered in the boat. It is extremely important to make sure that you thoroughly check all equipment before boating, and ensure that it is in proper working order.
Steps to Take to Prevent Boating Accidents First, you should realize that every state has different boating laws. Some states will even suspend your automobile driving privileges for boating violations, therefore you need to fully understand your states boating laws before you hit the water. Never operate your boat while under the influence of alcohol. To prevent accidents, you must be fully alert, aware, and pay attention to your surroundings. This is impossible to accomplish for anyone who has been drinking.
You should also make sure that you have the proper safety equipment on your boat. This includes life jackets, fire extinguishers, and making sure that you properly maintain the fuel system to prevent the chance of fire.
Prevent Capsizing To prevent your boat from capsizing, or from someone falling overboard, take steps to load the boat correctly. First, make sure that your boat is properly secured to the dock before loading. You should also ensure that all of your passengers are wearing life jackets before they board the boat. You should have one hand on the boat and the other hand on the pier and lower yourself into the middle or center of the boat. Once you are in the boat, keep to the center. Never enter the boat holding objects. Have someone hand you the items and stay center. This will prevent the boat from tipping over. It is important to make sure that all weight is distributed evenly throughout the boat. Another important precaution to take is to stay clear from the sides of the boat. Accidents have occurred when people have leaned against or sat upon the sides of the boat, (the gunwale) and have accidentally fallen overboard. Also, make sure that all passengers on the boat never run around on the boat. This can cause the boat to capsize, so always keep to the center and stay low. By following safety procedures and precautions, you can ensure that you will have a safe and enjoyable boating experience.
