RV Microwave Options for Motor Homes and Recreational Vehicles

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

For those who wish to take it on the open road on a part-time or full time basis and see this great nation by RV, it behooves them to pick the right Microwave Oven. Why you ask? Well if you are traveling a lot you may not have time to cook on the stove or in the oven in your recreational vehicle and a microwave oven sure comes in handy.

Of course with the condition of some of the roads in this country, such as the NY Toll-ways, I-10 going thru Louisiana, I-20, I-30 in AR or the scalloped Earthquake freeways in California; you are going to need sturdy appliances. A microwave can be a temperamental appliance as it bangs around and is jarred into oblivion.

May I be so good to recommend that when and if your microwave goes out in your RV due to the manufacturer trying to trim costs that you replace it with a more powerful higher end unit? First consider that to properly cook your food you are better off to buy a carousel unit, which turns the food as it cooks.

Additionally, it is recommended you go for high power too. I chose the Samsung MR-7494W. Installation is easy and you can do it yourself and it is a common size for motor homes and recreational vehicles. Be sure to make sure that your generator has at least 15 Amps capacity with such a microwave if you are replacing an old one. This Samsung unit I have has lasted nearly 5 years and has traveled to every city in the nation over 10,000 people and over some of the worst roads in our country. Consider all this in 2006.

Guide to Travel Trailers

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

If you are a part-time RVer, the travel trailer may be an option worth taking a look at. It gives you some of the freedom of a full blown RV without the price.

A travel trailer is not quite a traditional RV. The obvious difference is you pull a travel trailer. At their core, travel trailers are essentially a form of a mobile home on wheels. Of course, they are designed to be hauled to and fro and can take a beating with the best of them.

Travel trailers come in a wide variety of forms. Some are tiny with next to no amenities basically a place to sleep. Others are really big and basically serve the purpose of a full blown home you can haul all over the place for extended trips limited only by your budget. Lets take a closer look.

The bottom of the market is the trailer that retails from about $12,000 or less. These trailers are the roughing it version of the market. You are going to get cheap fabrics and appliances, to the extent you get them. These appliances may be limited solely to a small propane stove. If there is any type of a bathroom facility, it will be laughably tiny. When considering this type of trailer, you need to be comfortable buying what is essentially a sleeping space and somewhere to get out of bad weather.

Moving up a step, trailers priced from $35,000 on down are tailored more towards the traditional RV travel experience. These trailers tend to come in two forms. The first is a shorter unit with lots of amenities. The second is a bigger, longer unit with fewer amenities, but a ton of living space for the price. Which should you choose? It depends on whether you need space or not. If not, go with the amenities version.

High-end trailers tend to be a luxury item. Whether to buy one is a matter of personal preference between preferring to haul the trailer or buy and drive a traditional RV. Why? Well, the prices are comparable. You can spend up to $100,000 or more on a high-end trailer. As a result, you need to ask yourself whether an RV would be preferable. There is no right answer, just your personal choice.

The quality and cost of travel trailers tend to be very brand specific. When shopping for them, make sure to research the different units and then canvas as many dealers as possible. You will be surprised how prices differ.

Dump the Generators and Solar Up Your RV for About $8,000

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

To adequately set up a motor coach with solar power will run you about $8,000 and this will include the panels on the roof, super batteries, installation and a control module. The control module is the most inexpensive component, only about $150.00 and it will keep you from over cooking your batteries and turn off the collection from the solar panels when the batteries are 100% charged up. It will also prevent potential fire hazard too.

You will need a number of panels and you need to consider how much power you will need, including air-conditioners, lighting, microwaves, personal computers, dishwasher, washer and dryer or whatever additional electrical units you have. I do not recommend getting rid of your portable generator if you already have one, as you never know when you will need it. I have an Onan Quiet Diesel 7500 and I cannot ever imagine getting rid of it, even with the solar power.

When I say dump the generator, I really mean dump the fuel expense to run it and go pure, that energy from the Sun makes sense to use and with fuel prices this high the return on investment can be achieved very quickly for the full-time RVer. Convert that wasted empty space on top of your RV and help yourself to some energy from the Sun. Please consider all this in 2006.

RV Air-Conditioning Systems Considered

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

One of the most important things to consider when driving around this great nation in a recreational vehicle is your air-conditioning system. If your air-conditioning system goes out while you are in Arizona in the summer time with a 119-degree day you will most likely perish. And certainly dying is most likely not they way you wanted your vacation to conclude. So, I therefore recommend installing a robust air-conditioning system and further recommend that you do the required preventative maintenance on it as well.

For my coach I chose to install a few AIRXCEL RVP brand units and I am happy I did and quite satisfied as they have operated trouble free for five years now. And best of all they are made in the United States supporting our own US workers here at home too. AIRXCEL has several brands and service centers and distributors nationwide although I have never had to call on any of them thanks to trouble free equipment.

For the best air quality I recommend changing out the filters in each unit about every three months, unless you are in a really dusty environment. If so do this after you leave to maintain proper coach air quality. I recommend always having at least three sets of filters with you at all times. As you take apart the unit you should inspect all the electrical parts for dust and debris and if they need to, blow them out to free the dust, but use a shop vacuum first to get most of it; make sure the unit is off and the power too. Please consider all this in 2006.

Worst Toll Way in the Country for an RV

Monday, September 1st, 2008

In our 2005-2006 Tour and Survey of the Worst Roads to Drive on in the United States of America, we made a special section this year for Toll Ways only. Why you ask? Well because many of the complaints that RV’ers have came from roads that they actually had to pay to drive on, which if you think about it is rather appalling indeed.

Why should you have to pay to have your travel trailer, motor home coach or Recreational vehicle destroyed by roads that are in a state of disrepair? Worse off we noted the worst toll way to drive on for an RV was the New York State Toll Way from Virginia to CT. In fact we counted 39 dangerous bumps, 234 serious bumps and over 490 large bumps while driving the right two lanes most of the trip.

Our cost to have our pots and pans and everything that is stored in the RV jarred, we placed at $28.00 in damage. While the cost of repairs to the RV was estimated at $550 including need for an alignment; of course we have no way of knowing all the damage to components, such as the refrigerator and other appliances or the suspension, tires and body parts. Nevertheless we rate the NY Toll Way on I-95 as the worst toll way in the United States for RVs. Thanks for nothing.

Everything You Need to Know about Camping Trailers

Monday, September 1st, 2008

A great alternative to \”roughing it\” while camping is to rent or purchase one of the many models of camping trailers available on the market. Camping trailers can range from a hard-top tent trailer that requires some set-up and will easily pull behind even a small sized car through to a larger, all-in-one unit that is literally a home away from home on wheels. Each type of camping trailer has pros and cons to ownership, but one of the largest factors with any type of trailer is the cost.

The pop-up or fold down tent trailer is a less expensive option for campers that will be camping in established campgrounds or at least in areas where there is access by road. These camping trailers have an aluminum and steel or fiberglass and steel bottom with a lid or top that securely fastens while the trailer is being stored or moved. The trailer lid or top is raised through a crank mechanism to its full height of about eight feet over the bed area of the trailer. There are two or three bunks or sleeping platforms that then fold out, giving the appearance of a tent. These areas are usually large enough to comfortably hold two adults each and are roughly the size of a very large double bed. There may also be extensions that can be used to provide even more sleeping and relaxing space.

Most models of the camping trailer will also include permanent storage cupboards within the bed area. These are ideal for storing utensils, supplies and even clothing. In many models, small fridges and freezers, sinks, countertops and even cooking surfaces are built in to provide all the comfort of home. The central area has a collapsible table and a bench-like arrangement providing lots of seating. The newer models of tent trailers may also be wired for electricity and can easily be hooked to a generator for the full conveniences of home.

The more deluxe versions of a camping trailer are the fifth-wheel trailer and the travel trailer. These are completely rigid body trailers that are very comparable to a small apartment that is rectangular in shape and contains all the comforts of home. Most fifth-wheel and travel-camping trailers have showers, indoor toilet facilities, separate sleeping areas and even a full, apartment sized kitchen area. Many of these trailers have a generator in the design of the unit and there may even be options for television sets, entertainment units and even wireless internet connections.

Choosing the right camping trailer does require some thought and consideration, as well as some attention to your budget and spending requirements. Both types of trailers are relatively durable and will last for many years with proper care and maintenance. Storage for the smaller tent style camping trailers is easier for most people than trying to store the large fifth-wheel trailers and travel trailers. Spend some time looking around or even consider renting some different camping trailers to try out before you decide on the model and brand that is right for you and your family.

Fitting A Fridge In Your Caravan or Campervan

Monday, September 1st, 2008

Why Have An Approved Installation?\r
\r It Avoids-\r
\r Poor Refrigerator Performance\r
\r Cold Draughts Entering The Living Space\r
\r Rain Through Vents\r
\r Flue Problems

THE RECESS:
\r 1. The refrigerator must stand on its feet (including lower hinge) and be firmly secured in a strong housing.\r
\r 2. Removal for servicing must be straightforward.\r
\r 3. Provide a minimum 10-20mm gap behind the refrigerator.\r
\r 4. The refrigerator door must be free to open a minimum of 105 without obstruction to allow for the removal of interior fittings.

THE VENTILATION - ESSENTIAL FOR GOOD REFRIGERATOR PERFORMANCE
\r 1. For the refrigerator to perform correctly each vent must have a free effective area of a least 240cm. For models exceeding 60L capacity the free effective area should be at least 300cm. The Dometic (formerly Electrolux) type A1620 ventilation system more than adequately complies with this requirement. Position the upper vent relative to the rear of the fridge so that the top edge of the vent is at least 55mm above the top of the fridge.

2. Dometic recommend the use of their A1620 ventilation system, as this is the only system tested with their range of Caravan/Campervan refrigerators. With other systems water can enter through the vents and saturate the area behind the fridge.

3. A gas escape hole 13cm in area must be provided under the refrigerator (not beneath the burner) so that any unburnt LP gas can escape. If it is situated in a cupboard beneath the refrigerator then a label warning the user not to obstruct the vent should be provided.

4. The cooling unit must be sealed off from the interior of the Caravan or Campervan at the rear of the refrigerator for optimum performance and to prevent cold draughts from entering the living space. Failure to meet this Criteria will allow warm air to collect around the refrigerator, the heat will re-enter the refrigerator through the insulation and the performance will suffer.

5. The Caravan/Campervan door (when fully open) should not obstruct the cooling unit vents nor the flue outlet otherwise the refrigerator performance could suffer, particularly in high ambient temperatures, and flue gases may be slow to disperse. The average distance between the vents and the door should be in excess of 25mm

THE FLUE:
\r 1. Only the approved Dometic flue kit must be used.\r
\r 2. The flue top must be secured using the screw provided to avoid the risk of restriction.\r
\r 3. Allow 5mm clearance between the flue pipe and combustible material in the wall of the Caravan/Campervan to avoid fire risk.\r
\r 4. Provide a minimum of 10mm clearance between the end of the flue pipe and the flue top to avoid distortion of the flue cover.\r
\r 5. Fit the perforated flue cap to avoid dirt and moisture ingress and to prevent accidental flame blowout.\r
\r 6. Ensure that the gap between the flue cap and the inner surface of the flue cover always exceeds 5mm to avoid the risk of restriction.\r
\r 7. On the non-integrated flue system sealant should only be applied between the outer flue cover and the flange plate of the flue tube at the top and side only. It should not be applied behind the flue tube flange plate.

LP GAS CONNECTION
\r 1. The supply pipe should be of copper to avoid gas leaks and should be connected to the refrigerator inlet pipe by means of a suitable threaded coupling.\r
\r 2. An approved union gas cock must be incorporated in the supply line at a point accessible to the user to enable the refrigerator to be isolated.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
\r Ensure that cables do not touch the flue pipe or hot parts of the cooling unit.

240 VOLT SUPPLY
\r 1. Should be either via a 3 amp fused and properly earthed plug and socket or through a 5 amp contact breaker.

12-VOLT SUPPLY

RV Waster Water Odors; Gray Water and Sewer Water Solutions

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Recreational Vehicles have holding tanks for the water that is used. The water for the showers, sinks, dishwashers and laundry go into the gray water tank and the water for the toilets along with all that waste goes into a sewer tank. Generally, this does not cause any issues, but sometimes it can cause problems and odor and therefore you need to monitor this situation, dump at a specified RV dump as needed and take care of odors as they occur.

The best thing I have found to eliminate odor in the sewer water holding tank is the Thetford Aqua-Kem RV products. They come in granulars, liquids or dissolvable tablets. You can have your choice of also non-formaldehyde odor control in Aqua-Kem Green and both are bio-degradable too. These products in the 64 ounce bottle last a very long time, over a year in fact even if you are dry camping full-time. Another product they make is Aqua Zyme, which actually eats the waste and that is a very nice idea too.

For gray water odor, which can occur if you allow your gray water holding tank to fill up too much or if it gets extremely hot where you are; I use Thetford Gray Water Odor Control in the 20 ounce bottle. I bought some about a year ago and the bottle is just under half full still. For the serious RVer odor elimination is an important consideration and I hope you will consider all this in 2006.

Used Recreational VehicleWhen You Should Not Buy

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Buying a used recreational vehicle can be a great investment. But it can also be a nightmare if the RV is not as promised. Most buyers will advertise the used recreational vehicle in glowing terms and make you think that it is almost as good as buying new. Although there are some RV owners who really do maintain their RVs as carefully as the manufacturer recommends, most neglect at least one or two items which can lead to problems when you purchase it as a used recreational vehicle. You can take any used RV to your dealer or a good mechanic to get it checked out, but there are some things that you can look for which will give you an early warning system to save you the trouble if it is not worth your time.

1. The number one cause of structural problems in most used recreational vehicle models is water damage. Leaks in the ceiling, windows, doors and even from appliances like the water heater, refrigerator, and the dishwasher can cause problems and can ruin a used recreational vehicle well before its engine goes out. Look for excess sealant around windows and doors as well as stains in the ceiling and on the walls. If the floor feels spongy this is another indication of leaks.

2. A smoky (not cigarette) smell in a used recreational vehicle is another indication of problems. It is not uncommon for a fire to break out from a propane leak or tank problem. If this RV has been in a fire, you will want to know about it and any repairs that were done.

3. If the used recreational vehicle looks older than it should for its age, this usually means that it has not been well-maintained or stored properly. You will probably have to spend more money on repairs on this RV than you will save on the purchase price.

4. Of course you will take a test drive, but make sure that you travel both on freeways and surface streets to see how the RV handles and sounds in both situations.

5. Up to date and documented service records are a great resource if you can get them from the owner. If everything looks like it is in order, you can feel confident in taking it to your mechanic to get an even more thorough check before you buy.

Places to Stay In Your RV In Alabama

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

If ever there was a state that is perfect for seeing in an RV, it is Alabama. If you take a trip to explore this state, the following places are great places to stay.

Places to Stay In Your RV In Alabama

Alabama is a perfect state to take your family to for their next vacation. Travel there in an RV, and you will enjoy the trip even more! Recreational vehicles are perfect for seeing all the sights that Alabama has to offer, such as the twenty different state parks sprinkled throughout the state, as well as the many amusement parks, historical attractions and more. There is so much to see and do in Alabama that taking an RV here makes perfect sense you can stop at different points throughout and stay for a day, or a week.

If you are planning to visit the state parks located in the northern part of Alabama, there are quite a few clustered close together to make this trip a bit easier. The biggest of these parks is the Joe Wheeler State Park, located just two miles west of Rogersville, Alabama (off of US Highway 72). This park offers RV campers a variety of amenities, as well as being a great place to enjoy the atmosphere of camping in the South. A marina located within the park offers outdoorspeople a place to go boating and fishing, and Joe Wheeler Park offers fishermen many different tournaments and other activities to enjoy the water.

As one of the best places to stay is located in a state park, the Joe Wheeler facilities, offer RV campers many amenities and useful utilities for their stay. 110 of the campsites (there are 116 total) offer full hookups, which include electric, water and sewage. The campsites are large and level, perfect for your RV, and there are also river views available. Each area has its own modern bathhouse with showers, and the campground itself offers campers a convenience store, for those little things they may have forgotten. Camping supplies are also available, as well as firewood.

If you would prefer to stay in the southern part of Alabama, the Gulf State Park is as far south as you can get in the state. Located on the Gulf Shores of Alabama, this facility offers two miles of beaches on the Gulf, as well as access to an 18 hole golf range and a freshwater lake for fishing. The camping here is available in two types, primitive (without hookups, usually used by tent campers) and full featured, for those who want their electricity.

Choosing where in Alabama to stay can be your biggest problem when planning your next RV adventure, but with the abundance of Alabama RV facilities located throughout the many state parks, you can be sure you will find the right spot for your family.
