Market research is critical to achieving business goals but, like everything else, it can be overdone. The keys to good market research are relevance, focus and economy. This is especially true fro the tea room as a new business.
Relevance:
Initially, the entrepreneur must decide what their target market is. and research that market to collect relevant information. For tea rooms geographic relevance is important. Generally speaking, most customers will visit the tea room within a certain radius of the site.
Demographic information that is readily available should be filtered for geographic relevance. \r Other filters for relevance should address issues like gender, purchases of loose leaf tea, standard of living, commitment to a healthy lifestyle, number of gourmet stores in the area and other characteristics.
Focus:
Develop a profile of the specific characteristics of the ideal customer. Focus on those characteristics and match the profile to the relevant data collected. The profile may be changed as more information and knowledge is gained. Continue to use the profile as a basis to evaluate the research.
Economy:
Every business has a specific marketing strategy that usually works best and has already been proven by your most successful competitors. You can benefit from their experience by copying successful marketing plans, including selling methods, pricing and advertising. Make a list of the most successful businesses that fall within your field of interest and study them. \r Successful local businesses are a goldmine of valuable information. Continue to make visits even after the tea room is started.
Solicit feedback from your customers .For example ask questions like how did you find us? And what did you enjoy about our tea room? In addition constantly review operations. If tea is consistently left in the pot or scones are frequently returned, consider revising your menu with more desirable products.
It will be difficult to make sound marketing and promotional decisions without being informed on customer real wants and needs. If a specific geographical area defines your market, low cost demographic reports based on the census can be obtained that will furnish information on population by race, income and home ownership. For resources that provide this information, use http://www.Google.com to search for \”demographic data\” on the Internet.
Competition:
Understanding the strength and weaknesses of the competition is an important part of the planning process. The first step in understanding the competition is defining who actually the competition is. If there is another tea room in the vicinity, defining the competition is obvious. But if there are a number of entities offering complementary products to tea the choice is less clear.
After the competition is identified, their weakness must be attacked. These include:
Offering low quality tea and food products
Utilizing shabby or dirty tea ware
A menu that is limited and not complimentary to the tea experience
Provide a tea environment that is cold and sterile or shabby and trashy
No attention to customer service
No promotion a build it and they will come message
The Internet:
For the tea room, the most effective and economical place to developing good marketing information is the internet. With the introduction of advanced, powerful search technology (e.g. Google) searches are cost effective, powerful and can be continuously updated. Further by proper use of the internet, a tea room owner can gain experience from tea rooms across the country.
Tea Room Tip: Loose leaf tea drinkers are demanding but will pay for quality and service. Give your customers more than they expect.
Tea Room Tip: Learn what marketing works best from others in your business.
Tea Room Tip: You can use Google (http://www.Google.com) to search for prospects, compatible businesses as well as tea articles and accessories to include items for your tea room web site.

I grew up drinking teas and have had experienced the delicious green tea recipes. Did you know that in China, green tea has been used in cooking as long as the tea has been used for drinking? As you have noticed, it has becoming more and more popular to incorporate green tea into cooking.
The good news is that most of the ingredients you will use in a green tea recipe does not require special ingredients (other than the tea itself) nor special trip to Asian supermarkets.
Eating with green tea has a lot of benefits such as preventing cancer and heart disease, restricting the increase of blood cholesterol, controlling high blood pressure, lowering of blood sugar levels, controlling inflammation, suppressing the aging process, refreshing your body, fighting virus, and promoting weight loss.
Yes, a nice bonus of including green tea in your diet is the slowing of the absorption of carbohydrates and stimulating fat burning. The other reason is the unforgettable flavor of the food. High quality green tea has a very distinct flavor that many experience that is unique to green tea.
So how do you cook with green tea? If the recipe calls for brewed tea, make sure that you use fresh bottled spring water when making your tea. Tap water contains chemicals which can change the taste of a brew. Pls. remember that different types of tea require different temperatures of water.
To get the best flavor and the most infusions, pick a high quality green tea and if you can afford it, choose an organic tea. Then brew your green tea with a boiling water at 160 - 170 degrees Fahrenheit. This is because it is better to steep green tea at a lower temperature for a little longer rather than forcing the tea leaves to open up and release their essence with high temperature. Doing so will result to a bitter brew.
In order to achieve the optimum health benefits of green tea, make sure to wait for 3-4 minutes of brewing time.
To use green tea bags for cooking, add a little steaming water to the teapot and swirl the water to warm the teapot. Place 2 to 4 teabags in the pot and immediately pour 1/4 cups of boiling water over the tea bags. Cover and infuse for 2-3 minutes. This will make 1 cup of very strong tea. Then use this liquid according to the recipe.
To use loose tea leaves, first brew or steam the leaves and infuse for 5 minutes. Do not use a tea ball or strainer because you want the leaves to be fully infused.
Normally, you use dry leaves as a seasoning, the brew as a sauce, and the infused leaves as vegetables. Another way to infuse dry tea leaves is to steam them until infused before adding to the dish.

Tea wholesalers are an important, if sometimes overlooked, segment of the loose leaf tea business and they add significant value to the tea marketing and distribution process.
Tea wholesalers add value to the efforts of tea suppliers by reselling tea and adding value added products and services. Wholesale customers include hotels, restaurants, retail/grocery outlets, and coffee bars/cafes
The value that tea wholesalers add is significant. For example:
Hotels provide high quality loose leaf tea to guests in rooms, room service, spas and restaurants.
Restaurants complement high quality meals with good tasting fine tea either in ice tea or after dinner hot tea.
Retail/grocery outlets present quality tea products in an attractive and convenient display
Tea rooms, coffee bars and cafes add tasty food and comfortable surroundings to the tea experience
It is important to understand that a wholesale relationship should include more than a catalogue and a discounted price list and should offer additional benefits to the qualified wholesaler. A comprehensive package of services supports the role of the tea wholesaler and the value they add to the tea distribution process.
Services and benefits to the wholesaler should include quality of product, quality of support services and volume pricing.
The supplier of tea must provide the highest quality, best tasting tea on the market since this will attract and keep more loyal customers to the wholesaler. Wholesalers should deal with a supplier whose brand has a reputation for consistent quality. Suppliers who cup every imported chest of tea add considerable value.
Providing the wholesaler with dedicated customer support offers the benefit of a dedicated representative to help with orders, track shipments, provide billing support etc. This aspect of customer service creates long term benefit to both suppliers and wholesalers.
As an integral part of a long term relationship the suppler should offer the wholesaler multiple-tier wholesale pricing. Aggressive pricing provides the wholesaler greater profits through larger volume based discounts.
In addition, some suppliers offer auto-adjusting price levels that reward higher volumes from the wholesaler in real time and wholesale status indicators that remind the wholesaler when it is getting close to the next wholesale level.
Those suppliers with state of the art e-commerce sites provide automatic retrieval of past orders that save the wholesaler significant time when re-ordering. In addition these sites often support auto recurring shipments that save time and effort and avoids ordering errors.
In addition comprehensive order history lookup on e-commerce sites is an attractive option because this feature avoids ordering and billing confusion.
Finally, some supplier sites offer unlimited shipping locations per order and single point of billing for multiple locations.
The wholesaler affiliation with the tea supplier is very important because of the value added nature of the relationship. A total package of services that support the wholesaler will pay dividends in the future.

Starbucks is of course known for its coffee and some folks swear by it; telling us it is the only coffee they will drink. Indeed Starbucks is glad to see this as their average store does $85,000 in gross revenue per month. But did you know that not all of that is Frappachinos, Coffee, Pastries and Retail Cups and Coffee Makers?
Many of the purchases at Starbucks are those folks buying Tea. And Starbucks has quite a selection too. Howard Shultz the Founder of what is now the modern day Starbucks is quite pleased with the companys tea sales and plans on further boosting them and getting more customers to drink their tea. Tazo Tea is a Starbucks Groupies favorite for sure.
Where does all this Tea come from you ask? Well the answer is quite a fascinating story in itself; it comes from all over the World actually. Places like India, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Africa and many of the other major tea producing regions of the World. This is because Sub-Tropical areas help evergreen tea shrubs grow very well. And this is where Starbucks gets its Green Teas and Black Teas from you see?
Starbucks also has Herbal Teas, but these do not come from Tea Leaves, rather from Flowers, roots, bark, berries, herbs, spices and even fruit skins. Only a few of these teas have any caffeine in them and most are caffeine free. You owe it to yourself to learn all the types of teas available at your local Starbucks. So, consider this in 2006.

The are five major categories of tea. White, green, Oolong-style (brown), and black teas come from the tea plant, Camellia Sinensis. Herbal teas are made from herbs, spices, fruits, flowers, and bark, and contain no tea leaves. Similar to wine varieties, sometimes the name of a tea indicates the region in which it is grown, which affects its flavor. Examples of these names would be: Ceylon, Darjeeling, Assam, Lapsang Suchong. Some teas, such as Jasmine, and Earl Gray, are tea leaves with added flavors. Orange Pekoe does not refer to adding orange flavor to the tea, but rather refers to the size of the leaf and its grade.
Green tea is made from tea leaves which are steamed or pan-fried to prevent fermentation (oxidization). This gives it a delicate flavor. Green tea is very high in anti-oxidants and studies have shown it prevents tooth decay and gum disease. Green teas are particularly characteristic of Japan.
White tea is grown in the Fujian region of Eastern China. White tea contains the white buds of the tea plant, and like green tea it is unfermented and has a delicate flavor. White tea has a very pale color when brewed.
Oolong-style (brown) teas are teas that have been semi-fermented, meaning the leaves are slightly oxidized and turn brown in color.
Black teas are fully fermented tea leaves. Darjeeling, Russian Black Tea, Lapsang Suchong, and English Breakfast, are examples of fully fermented tea. Darjeeling has a mild flavor, and breakfast teas, Russian teas and Lapsang Suchong have a strong taste and are very stimulating.
All teas contain polyphenols, though black teas contain less polyphenols than other varieties. Polyphenols are a type of anti-oxidant that inhibits inflamation and may discourage the occurrence of heart disease, tumors, and some of the effects of aging.

Today, tea is produced in over 40 countries and consumed in scores more. Yet, the flavors of this exquisite drink was unknown to the majority of the world till the late 19th Century when it started to be exported on a mass scale from its birthplace, China. Nearly, ninety percent of the worlds tea production comes from Asia and all the tea bushes around the world have their origins, either directly or indirectly, in China. Almost all the major tea producing nations have their own unique methods to process the tea leaves. Tea leaves which have been processed using methods practiced in Mainland China are known as Chinese tea.
The discovery of Chinese tea is an interesting one. The story as it goes in China is that Emperor Shen Nung in 2737 B.C. went on a long trip. When he stopped to rest, a servant went to get him boiling water. From a wild tea bush, a dead leaf fell into the pot of boiling water. Unnoticed to the eyes of the servant, it was presented to the Emperor who drank it and found the drink to be very refreshing. And thus, tea was born!
Then, as time progressed, so did a transition take place in the production of Chinese tea. The earliest mention of widespread drinking of tea in China was during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.). Then Chinese tea was processed in a way which many would find unbelievable today. Tea leaves were plucked, dried and then compressed in the form of cakes. The tea leaves in this dried cake form were then ground in stone mortars. The powdered cakes were in boiled in earthenware vessels and consumed as a hot beverage.
Later, during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 A.D.), the method to process Chinese tea underwent a change. During this period, the tea leaves were plucked, steam dried immediately and then ground to a fine powder. This powder was immediately put into wide bowls. The beverage resulting from this powder was iridescent white in color and highly regarded by the Song Court. Chinese tea during this period was mainly white tea and new varieties such as the Silver Silk Water Sprout and Palace Jade Sprout were developed by Emperor Huizong.
For decades, the process of steaming was the primary method of preparation of Chinese tea. However, during the fourteenth century, the method of producing Chinese tea underwent another transition. The tea leaves were roasted and allowed to crumble, rather than being steamed. This was the origin of modern day loose teas. However, what prompted this change on a mass scale was a decree by the Ming court in 1391 that only loose tea was to be accepted as tribute.
The processing of Chinese tea developed vastly in the seventeenth century. A process, known as fermentation was introduced. Though technically, this process was not fermentation, but rather an enzymatic oxidation of the tea leaves. This process could be manipulated to get the desired result by changing the rate of drying or steaming the leaves. In fact, in southern China, the leaves were sun dried and half fermented to produce Oolongs. Further development of Chinese tea led to the production of present day white tea in 1796 during the Qing Dynasty. Finally, mass export of Chinese tea started in 1891, with the export of the Silver Needle.
Today, the consumption of Chinese tea is prevalent in most parts of the world. Chinese green tea is the more popular one in the Americas, though the consumption of white tea is increasing at a fast pace, especially after studies detailing its health benefits have been published. Who could have thought that the wild leaf discovered unintentionally more than 4000 years ago would become one of the most popular beverages of all time!

You see, this special kind of tea contains all kinds of different natural ingredients that are highly effective at increasing the bodys metabolism and helping you burn calories faster.
The effects of Wu Long Tea have been studied for quite some time, with one of the most recent publications reaching the market in 2003. This study showed the world that there actually were helpful benefits for people who were looking to lose weight by drinking this particular type of tea. By testing the tea against water and other tea, it was shown that the Wu Long Tea was able to increase the metabolism of the studys participants by as much as ten percent a huge jump if you need that extra boost to help shed those pesky pounds.

The cup of coffee has become a favorite eye-opening experience for most workaholics. Today none of them are excited over the increasing health warnings associated with their private indulgence. Caffeine comes to the rescue during early morning traffic hours, and late night study sessions.
It makes great company for cake parties and after-dinner socializing sessions. So when the doctor warns off caffeine to ward off heart problems and weight issues, and fitness fobics realize coffee will interfere with certain vitamin or creatine absorption - havoc is sure to ensue. There is literally no replacement for this private, daily soul fest - or is there?
According to research published by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and the American Association for Cancer Research, there are plenty of alternatives which will keep you on your toes thanks to the new and improved view of natures oldest flavor brew: the tea leaf.
Not only will you get the much needed high from this budding guardian angel, but according to new research, drinking three or more cups of loose leaf tea a day has found to be equally healthy as drinking water. Needless to say, coffee does not contain antioxidants inherent in tea, so the brewed bean has no health benefits in that regard compared to its leafy counterpart.
In the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers tell us that tea not only re-hydrates just like water, but also protects against heart disease and certain cancers. These experts listed flavonoids as the key ingredient in loose leaf tea which promotes health.
It was commonly believed that caffeine - as it is found in coffee - is a dehydrant. Studies on coffee have shown that high doses cause dehydration. Therefore it was commonly assumed any beverages containing caffeine would have to be dehydrating. However, according to research published by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, even a very strong cup of tea would still have a net gain of fluid.
Not only is tea re-hydrating, it also contains fluoride, which keeps teeth healthy. Unlike Coffee, tea contains antioxidants which are important to the immune system. Polyphenols contained in tea leaves reduce risk of heart disease. And finally, as reported by the American Association for Cancer Research, the chemo-preventive agent identified as EGCG most abundantly found in green tea has been associated with reduced risk of certain cancers.
So while coffee is not all evil, its pleasures are quite limited compared to research published on tea. There are many varieties of tea, its flavors depending on the region it was grown, particular seasons, processing styles and infusion practices.
Tea is receiving growing attention from those of us who have been forcefully weaned off coffee, as well as the few in between who happen to have the natural instincts for all things delicious. It is not faux coffee — it is a delightful way to start your day!

Cast iron teapot also known as tetsubin or cast iron tea kettle was used originally in Japan as kettle for boiling water which is done on an open fire. Japanese people then hang their tea kettle above their fireplace in order to provide enough heat, humidity and heat during cold weather.
During the introduction of green tea in the middle of the 19th century, a cast iron teapot was used on a regular basis making this beautiful teapot the famous kettle of choice during that time and even today.
Cast iron tea kettles have been considered the timeless form of tea kettles bringing not only warmth and soothing feeling to every family but also gives an undeniable elegance to every kitchen type.
Cast iron teapot is the oldest type of kettles around. What makes it popular is that it is non-toxic. It also has an excellent ability to retain heat.
However, one common problem of tea kettle users is the challenge in cleaning this teapot.
Due to the fact that it is iron, it is prone to rust. Cleaning your teapot is not that difficult if you know what you are doing.
But first of all, it is important to know that your teapot should only be used for your tea and your tea only and equally important, with the same type of tea instead of a using it on different types of tea or worse, use it for other type of food.
Cast iron teapot has the ability to absorb seasoning, \”taking the taste\” of your particular type of tea. Using the same teapot for different types of tea changes the taste or season of your tea kettle.
Use a dish soap for cleaning inside of your cast iron teapot but do not use a strong detergent. Another great tip is to add a bit of olive oil and salt.
Removing the rust inside the kettle is done by using any cotton cloth, wet it and add a a small portion of coarse salt and a small amount of olive oil into the bottom of the kettle. Rub the rusted areas with the wet cloth and air dry.
Knowing how to take care of your cast iron teapot will ensure a long lasting service and more delicious tea for you and your family.

Perhaps youve never been a tea drinker before, but youve decided to give it a whirl. Or maybe you already drink standard varieties of tea, but youd like to try black tea for a change of pace. In any case, youre wondering how you should go about drinking this unusual full-bodied beverage.\r To begin with, you should be aware of the fact that tea aficionados around the globe tend to make tea in a similar way. Yet, it is true that certain methods of tea preparation may differ from country to country and from region to region.
Favorite Methods
For example, in India, black tea is often steeped with a combination of milk and hot water. In Great Britain and the rest of the United Kingdom, tea tends to be stepped quite strong, with milk or a sweetener such as sugar or honey added to enhance the taste. In the United States, its quite popular to microwave a cup of cold water in order to brew tea. However, it is a fact that many Americans are now opting for loose teas rather than tea bags.
What You Should Know About Black Tea
Black tea tends to vary in color from a shade of reddish brown to black. Interestingly enough, as black tea ages, it often becomes even more flavorful. In order to store black tea, you should place it in a location that is ventilated well, but you dont really have to worry about the temperature of the location. In general, black tea is formed into cakes that can be round, square, or tube-like. How black tea smells and tastes may depend largely on the location in which it was harvested. As a result, scent and flavor may vary significantly from region to region.
Black tea is known for its therapeutic benefits. For instance, fans of black tea in China tend to have little problem with cancer or other degenerative illnesses. In fact, they may have better overall health than non-tea drinkers.
Types of Black Tea
When thinking about buying black tea, it is important for you to know the varieties that are available. For instance, if youre interested in a high-quality tea, you might consider Keemun. This type of tea has a strong aroma and can be consumed with or without milk and sweetener. Another superior type is Darjeeling, an Indian tea that is known for its delicate taste. Meanwhile, Assam is a less spicy version of Keemun, but it is also known for its rich taste.
If youre interested in a Chinese black tea, you might consider Lapsang Souchong, which is characterized by an unusual smoky flavor. For a Chinese tea with a little bit of a kick, try Yunnan, which offers a hint of pepper.
If you prefer a lighter tea, the Indian Nilgiri may be best. However, be aware of the fact that Nilgiri requires expert steeping in order to achieve the right flavor.
Drinking Black Tea in Style
If you really want to drink black tea in style, you should consider indulging in it at a tea salon. Such salons are ever-present, not only in Chinese cities such as Beijing, but also in Taiwan. You should be aware of the fact that menus at tea salons tend to feature a range of items. In addition, the dcor can differ significantly from salon to salon.
For the people of the Orient, tea salons can be as trendy as Starbucks cafes are in the Western world. Salons tend to stay open late enough to accommodate late-night patrons. They are also a favorite of young people. Visit a tea salon in China and you may find dozens of different varieties of teas available. Some of the teas may have been aged two decades or more, causing them to have an especially appealing flavor. One Pu-erh tea is actually more than a century old and is considered a national treasure among the Chinese.
The tea salons of the Orient may also have a number of different sections, each reflecting a different kind of atmosphere. For instance, one section may be considered more or less a reading room, while another is best suited for playing games. As a result of this, tea salons are definitely classified as a destination location.
Fun Ways to Enjoy Black Tea
There are certainly other entertaining ways that you can enjoy black tea. For instance, you might consider holding a tea-tasting party where you invite a group of friends to sample various black tea delicacies. Or you can plan a meal from the country of origin of your favorite blend of black tea. In other words, the possibilities for enjoying black tea are limited only by your own imagination.
Once you make black tea a regular part of your diet, youll quickly discover that it may be able to soothe your nerves as nothing else can.
