Watch Terms Part II

The previous article I wrote covered some basic watch terms. This article will cover some various features timepieces have. Timepieces have functions ranging from tachymeters to solar power. Hopefully the following section of watch terms will allow you understand the features you want your next timepiece to have.

Kinetic - Seiko watches has a line they refer to as Kinetic. This is basically a quartz movement that doesn't use a battery. The regular movement of your arm charges a capacitor which in turn powers the quartz movement. Depending on the model the capacitor will stay charged for about a week if it is not moved.

Automatic Winding - The mechanical movement is wound by the motion of the wearer's arm. If an automatic watch is not worn for a couple days it will loose time and need to be reset.

Eco-Drive - Is a power mechanism patented by Citizen watches. The solar technology recharges the battery allowing some models to remain powered in the dark for up to five years. The nice thing about this feature is the battery will never have to be replaced.

Atomic - Atomic Time Standard is provided by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder Colorado. Atomic time is so accurate it can be measured on instruments. The institute transmits the Atomic time in radio waves for North America. Many Atomic watches are designed to automatically capture these radio waves.

Chronograph - The Chronograph function measures elapsed time. The elapsed time is calculated by a second hand that moves separately from the timekeeping component. The second hand makes one revolution per minute and can be started, stopped and returned to zero.

Fly-Back - This feature is combined with chronograph functions and allows multiple measurements to be taken at the same time. The really nice thing about this is you don't have to start the measurements at the same time. The function was created for military pilots.

Quartz - Quartz is a caliber that utilizes the vibrations of a small crystal to maintain accuracy. The Quartz movement can be powered by automatic mechanics, solar, or battery

Tachymeter - Tachymeter or tachometer is a feature found on some chronograph watches. This function measures the speed the wearer has traveled over a measured distance.

The purpose of this article was to explain some of those cool sounding watch functions that we have no idea what they do. I hope these definitions will allow you to better select your next timepiece.
