Wine Bottle Corks: Are They Really That Important?

There is much debate out there between wine bottle corks and the up and coming popular screw top versions. To some people it does not matter one little bit. So long as the red or white that they are drinking tastes good and it is within their budget, who cares how it is sealed?

But alas, to many other people, especially the enthusiasts, there is no comparison between the two, as they will only believe that the cork is the best choice. To start with many people do not like change. They prefer to continue along the path of success without the need to try different things. In other words why change something that is already working?

Well, some people may say that for a start having a screw top makes things so much easier. You do not have to worry about having a corkscrew on hand either. How many times have you gone off on a picnic for example and go to open your favorite Chardonnay and realize you forgot the opener? If you had one with a screw cap then there would be no problem would there?

Of course the wine bottle and corks have been together for a very long time and as I said before, it is hard to change old habits. So instead of going over to caps some manufacturers have gone for plastic wine bottle corks. These work the same way as the usual versions as they do not allow air to reach the beverage but they are less likely to produce cork taint. This is where the wine to some, tastes moldy and is said to be caused from the cork. There are of course adverse findings to this where it is said not to be the corks fault entirely. We will always find debate on this subject. The negatives with the plastic varieties is that they cannot be replaced into the bottle after opening which can cause a problem to some.

As I am no expert in this field all I can really say is that from the many different bottles that I have had the pleasure of drinking, I have found there to be no major difference between wine bottle corks (of either kind) or screw caps. All the reds and whites have been quite satisfying to my taste buds regardless of how they have been sealed.

In the end as I have mentioned previously, it all comes down to taste, budget and convenience. You will have to make up your own mind on this one.
